CHALLENGE
A national student membership organisation with more than 1500 members wanted to embed equity and inclusion across all activities but lacked a clear starting point or practical framework. Members had varied awareness of equity concepts, and there was no consistent approach to guide decision-making, and day-to-day engagement. The organisation needed accessible knowledge, interactive learning, and input from people with lived experience to build understanding and embed inclusive practices.
APPROACH
We designed and facilitated a series of interactive equity workshops, engaging expert speakers and facilitators. Activities included:
Presentations from lived experience experts and sector leaders.
Interactive exercises and scenario-based discussions to surface biases and systemic barriers.
Guidelines document on knowledge and best practices
Post-workshop reflection sessions to embed learning and gather feedback.
IMPACT
Workshops increased staff awareness and confidence in applying equity principles (36% of members reported improved understanding). The organisation developed a shared language and practical tools to inform decision-making, and internal practices. Members highlighted that hearing real-world experiences from speakers brought theory to life, creating commitment and momentum for ongoing equity initiatives.
